Earning the Right to be independent

Updated: Nov 12, 2024

When I first start working with a child, I don’t allow the child to do tasks independently.  I want the child to be engaging with me to do the task and to be learning from me.  If the child has not yet learned to follow along with an adult; has not yet learned to use his eyes to figure out what he needs to do; has not yet learned to coordinate his actions with another person, then the child has not yet earned the right to do a task independently! His performance, without the listed underlying skills will be rote, not dynamic, and will not involve problem solving.  Without problem solving, the child will become stuck when changes occur, often causing a melt down. And most importantly, the child will not learn how to learn from others!
